One such hair care-related need happens to be that of wigs.

Whether it is for fashion or medical reasons, the wig industry plays a major role in terms of fashion and personal grooming.

Coming to the subject of the wigs themselves, there is much that is to be known here.

One of the most important, however, has to do with the actual maintenance of the wigs. This is important as wigs are delicate, and will get damaged easily without the right storage conditions.

There is a lot that can be done when it comes to the maintenance of wigs.

Given in the list are some of the most important tips that can help in maintaining human hair wigs in the long term.

Useful Human-Hair Wig Care Tips for Quality & Longevity

  1. Keep Wigs Away From Moisture and Humidity

If there is one word of advice that can help more than anything else, it would be this.

Moisture and humidity tend to encourage and promote the growth of microbes. These microbes in turn, can damage the material used in the wig, especially in the long run.

This is particularly true in the case of wigs made from a natural material, as opposed to synthetic ones.

A good way to prevent this problem would be to use a desiccant substance like silica gel, which absorbs moisture. Available in small packets weighing a couple of grams, they are very useful when it comes to storing moisture-sensitive materials such as electronics, etc. Also, they are fairly affordable and easy to store.

  1. Keep Away From Sources of Heat

Another important storage suggestion would be to keep wigs away from heat.

There are two different kinds of heat that are referred to here, each of which damages the wigs in their own way.

A warm storage temperature doesn’t directly damage the wig. At the same time, however, it can encourage microbial growth, especially when combined with a moist or humid environment. The microbial growth in turn, can and will damage the material, as already explained.

  1. Protect the Wig from Dust

Dust is another problem that needs to be addressed.

The problem here isn’t that the dust is directly harmful to the material. It doesn’t really affect the material in any way, even in the long run.

But it is rather difficult to get the dust out of the material, once it has accumulated. While it is certainly possible to wash it out using shampoos or solvents, all of it involves a little too much work.

In other words, think of this as being a case of prevention is better than cure.

A good way to store wigs would be in their original packaging, or something similar, which will provide a protective layer away from the dust.

  1. Use the appropriate cleaning agents to wash the wig

It is a fact that wigs will become dirty sooner or later.

And when it does, it is important for them to be washed using the appropriate cleaning agents, to keep them clean.

In the case of natural hair, it is a good idea to use soaps or shampoos during the wash. Likewise, in the case of synthetic materials, the best choice for the same would be a material like fabric softener. Then again, even in the case of synthetic material, it is possible to wash the same using shampoo as well.

  1. Detangle at Regular Intervals

One of the problems that wigs have is the same problem that almost everyone else has, especially if they have long hair.

With the passage of time, long hair trends to tangle up and end up a big mess. And if this tangling is not addressed in the right manner, sooner or later, the hair quality itself may be affected.

Things are no different in the case of wigs as well. The hair used in the wigs, whether artificial or natural, will tangle up with the passage of time, and thereby require routine detangling sessions.

Therefore, ensure that you detangle your wig every once in a while, so as to let them remain usable for an extended period of time.

It may seem like a lot of work, but it really isn’t the case. The way to go about it is fairly easy. To begin with, you will need to check the wig for any signs of tangling. Should it be discovered that the wig has tangled in a few places, try using a detangling brush to make the hair strands return to normal? In other cases, you may have to go for other measures such as washing it with shampoo or any other such chemical.

In extreme cases, you might just have to cut the tangled part of the wig entirely, as none of the methods explained above will work. Just make sure that when you do cut the tangled hair strands, to do it in such a way that it doesn’t affect the final appearance of your wig when you finally put it on.

  1. Create an Ideal Storage Space for the Wig

It is not likely that you will be using the wig at all times.

On the contrary, it is likely that you will stop using them at least for a part of the day, particularly during the night.

Ensure that when you do take off the wig, that you place it somewhere that is dry, clean, and dust-free and in a way that doesn’t damage it.

One of the most important things to take into consideration is that it is stored in a way that doesn’t ‘crumble’ it in any way. This is important because it is one of the main ways in which wigs get tangled up.

Last but not least, it must be added here that there are indeed many more steps that can be taken to maintain wigs in the long run.

Done right, it should be possible to maintain even the most normal of wigs, last for a very long time.
